Happy Tuesday Friends!
I trust September has been great to you and yours ?
Okay so, I was gisting someone about a wedding I went to the weekend before. “It was small and intimate and fun! No protocol, just merriment… At most, there were 80 people there! It was just beautiful!”
My friend, listened as I went on and on about the couple and their story and everything (I honestly did not shut up). When I was finally done, he looked at me and asked, “Did the groom cry?”
“Umm…. I kinda missed the ceremony, so I don’t know…” I replied. “His mom and many others, cried during the mother-son-dance, but I don’t recall seeing him cry. Why’d you ask?”
“Apparently that’s the new thing now” he replied. “Guys are not only required to buy huge rings and pay for an expensive wedding! Heaven forbid you’re from Naija because that means 2 weddings. Noo oh! Now, men have to add crying to the list to complete your bragging rights!!!”
I laughed, SO HARD! Just as I was about to ask him to explain himself, he told me the following story:
“Remember I told you one of my guys got married months back and I was a groom’s man? Well, I was using his phone to take photos of him and the guys when his wife-to-be sent a text that read, “REMEMBER!” I teased him, “oh boy, e be like say fear dey catch your wife, this one she’s reminding you to show today??” Oh my God, do you know what he told me?
“OMG WHAT DID HE TELL YOU???” Asked yours truly ?
He said, “Oh boy, see me see wahala oo. She told me to cry small when I see her at the church. She has planned it with the photographer and wedding planner!”
I shouted “YOU ARE LY-ING!!!! THAT CAN’T BE TRUE!!!!! I REFUSE TO BELIEVE THAT!”
“My reaction exactly” my friend said. “But I kid you not, the guy said his wedding coordinator brought it up during their last meeting the night before the wedding.” He said his friend thought it was a joke until he and his wife-to-be started arguing about it. They got into a huge fight the night before.
So did your friend cry at the ceremony??
“Yes o! When the pastor pronounced them husband and wife, my guy started sniffing and then rubbed his eyes… That’s when his wife and her gang of girls shouted “AWWWWWW” and they kissed! I wanted lie, the crowd loved it.
I COULD NOT STOP LAUGHING!!!! But then the conversation got me thinking…
I won’t lie, I’ve wanted to write about this “men crying at their weddings” topic before. When the video of that Ghanaian dude that wept upon seeing his bride went viral, I was curious to know what people’s thoughts were. I later decided that I could care less. Cry or don’t cry; to each, his own.
But instructing your intended to cry?!? Mehn I don’t know oo…
Like seriously, is anything that happens at weddings real these days?! Are we so caught up in “how it will look” or “what people will say” and “how people will react” that we have to stage EVERYTHING?
I’m really curious to know what you guys think…
As always, thank you for reading! Have a fulfilling week!
Love always,
The Wawa-New Yorker
P.S. – thank you to everyone who checked in to make sure I was okay after the NYC bombings over the weekend. I truly appreciate the thought and genuinely concern. God bless you! ?

Nowadays, people esp ladies are more concerned about the “thrills and awww’s” wedding than the marriage itself… not tryna sound like a sexist here. That’s how her friends that knew about the cry plan will demand from their respective husband-to-be for the same thing and it keeps spreading. That’s what social media has done to some folks.
Wawa New Yorker says
Oh wow. I honestly didn’t think about that – friends demanding their own husbands cry. GOD! :'(
THATS CRAZY!!!!!!!
Thank your reading and sharing your thoughts on the matter

Love this post! I was grinning and chuckling the whole time!
For me personally I think the time and era we live in everything is about making noise and being noticed. No longer is it about enjoying life and the moments that occur on your journey. It’s sad because you can miss out on wonderful things!
For my future wedding if my husband- to- be cries or doesn’t. I’m cool with just being his wife-to-be and having family and friends there to share in our phenomenal moment of becoming one.
P.S. love your blog!

I won’t even if she insists. I will find a lot of excuses to discourage that. I will start with the bible and move forward to moral and intellectual justifications lol
Wawa New Yorker says
LMAO!!! Hopefully, you’ll never have to deal with that.

So the cries are staged! Na wa o! This generation is not taking anything sacred again. How sad! Rolls eyes!!
Wawa New Yorker says
*Sigh* I’m choosing to believe that the story narrated by my friend is an anomaly and every other instance thus far is real.

To add to your point that nothing is scared, it’s really scary when you hear about all these wedding stories. God help us all. Another reason why… 😉
Anyways, THANK YOU FOR READING AND LEAVING COMMENT!
