Happy Friday!
I hope this week was DA BOMB for you as it was for me! ???♀️??♀️
Okay so, last Sunday, something remarkable happened.
At the 2018 Golden Globe Awards, the women and men in attendance wore black, and the legendary Oprah Winfrey tailored her PHENOMENAL acceptance speech (for the Cecil B. DeMille Award for Lifetime Achievement) in solidarity and support of the #MeToo Movement.
For those who do not know, The #MeToo Movement is a movement to support survivors and end sexual violence. Victims have been asked to put up the status “Me Too” to expose the magnitude of the problem.
If you are alive and are still unaware, confused or even upset as to WHY this movement is such big deal now more than ever, allow me to educate you.
Trust me, you are in for a treat!
In 1991, Anita Hill publicly accused Clarence Thomas, a U.S. Supreme Court Nominee of sexual harassment. Given what was at stake, – he was to become the first African American hopeful of such a prestigious title-, Ms. Hill was brutally chastised. People called her delusional, some said she was a woman scorned and they tarnished her reputation. Despite her testimony, Clarence Thomas was confirmed to the Supreme Court by the United States Senate.
As you can imagine, the character deformation Ms. Hill suffered prevented victims from discussing sexual harassment publicly. The discussions did not end but they were hidden. When reported, a few brave victims were compensated privately. Some companies and universities even took action… But nothing too crazy.
Men had it good. They committed emotional murder and got away with it.
Until…
25 years later, a recording was released of a U.S. Presidential Candidate bragging about “grabbing women by the pussy” (sorry Mommy, he said it, not me?).
You see, in real life, this should have been enough to get said candidate disqualified. Or (if he had a moral compass), get him to withdraw his candidacy. But it didn’t… And he didn’t… In fact, he won!
Suddenly it dawned on women that the society we live in felt it okay for a man to do whatever they wanted, to whomever the wanted and go scot-free.
And this my friend, pissed the eff women off!
Today (unlike before) women are speaking out publicly about their sexual harassment experiences and not only are people listening to them, they are BELIEVING THEM! To add insult to injury for offenders, people are now DOING THINGS ABOUT IT!
Now if you are reading this and are still wondering what business of yours is this or as my people would say “how this one take concern me”, in the words of Kevin Hart, let me explain…
Genesis 11:6 KJV states “And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.”
It may have taken Hillary’s defeat to do so but women are getting into formation, are united in one voice and have decided that enough is indeed enough.
The impossible is happening: Powerful men like Matt Lauer are getting exposed and fired; stocks of companies associated with sexual violence are going down and people no longer want to work there; colleges/universities have to report rates of sexual offenses now which is affecting admission numbers and funding for research. And if you think you’re safe in Nigeria or some other part of the world, all it takes is for someone with a phone and a data plan to tell her story and share it via social media, for even the most lucrative and untouchable industries (like the entertainment industry) to be blackballed for foreign and then local investors.
Lol, They say hell has no fury like a woman scorned. Watch it, fellas, women are furious and you ain’t seen nothing yet.
While it may seem otherwise, this is not a man-bashing post. I am simply doing what I have always tried to do with this site which is to keep people informed.
We cannot empower women and girls without the support of man and boys.
So men, please, I beg you, support this movement and do your part.
Pay attention to yourself and the men in your circle. The world is shifting so you can’t just say anything or act anyhow anymore.
If you’re out with people who objectify women (that includes men who go to joints/bars in Enugu saying things to the waitresses like “baby come and sit on my lap), please, call them out on it.
If you hold a position in power, be respectful of your colleagues, subordinates, students etc.
If you have sons, raise them to be the kind of men you’d wish on your daughters.
You are a son, a brother, a friend, a husband, a father or a grandfather. Do not do anything to any woman that would bother you if your daughter or mother cried to you about it.
Do not wait for women to complain before taking action. You know right from wrong. Be an ally and fight with us through this.
Until next week, GOD BLESS YOU ALL AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR READING??!!!!
