In JS 1 (the 7th Grade), I loved Agricultural Science. While I had absolutely no interest in farming, I had the best teacher. “Uncle Chineked” was everything. You see, most of the teachers in my high school were miserable. They would come to class, bark out notes, curse out our parents and futures and leave. But Uncle Chineked was different. He was so happy, like he actually enjoyed being there. He always came in with a huge smile, cracked jokes, told stories and taught with so much enthusiasm. One day, he introduced us to the topic – weeding.
Uncle Chineked: Let’s say you planted green [spinach] and some weeks later, in addition to the green, you find corn too, what would you do?
Classmate: Uncle I will thank God
Uncle Chineked: Okay, then what?
Classmate: When it comes out, I will eat it with boiled groundnut
Uncle Chineked: That is why you are an idiot
Entire class: Laughed uncontrollably
Uncle Chineked: Because you did not plant it, that corn is called a weed. A weed is anything that grows in the farm that is not wanted
Classmate: But uncle, I like the corn
Uncle Chineked: Did you plant it?
Classmate: No but unc-
Uncle Chineked: Then it is a weed and you most remove it. If you leave it there, more will come out, absorb all the nutrients and kill the green you planted. The process by which unwanted plants are removed is called weeding. Just like in life. As you grow older, you have to keep checking yourself and remove people and things that are not good for you.
Classclown: Like Nwabunike? [another student]
Entire class: Laughed uncontrollably
Today is March 30, 2015. That means the first quarter of 2015 is almost done. Instead of asking about your 2015 goals, I purpose taking a stab at this concept, weeding.
Get rid of ANYTHING that isn’t enhancing your life. Get rid of old clothes/bags/shoes/jewelry you haven’t worn/used in years. Get rid of people that don’t bring out the best in you. Get rid of habits you know are bad for you. Create some space for yourself. It’s even in the Bible “If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away!” (Mattew 5:30) (Side note, MOMMY, I QUOTED THE BIBLE! HOLLER!)
But seriously, what if you don’t have your dream life because there’s no room for it in your current life? Where will you put the designer items if you have a closet full of crap you no longer wear? How can you start your business if you spend all your time in someone else’s business (on social media)? How will you meet Prince Charming if you are always spending time with Mr. Ibu?
Maybe its time to travel lighter so we can move faster to greatness 🙂
As always, thank you for reading.
